There was a tragedy in St Helens, Merseyside. 17-month-old Bella-Rae Birch was bitten by a dog in her own home. She’s dead.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon. The animal attacked the child. The intervening policemen had to kill the dog to save her. The girl was hospitalized, but died shortly thereafter of serious injuries.
“Whilst we are in the very early stages of the investigation into this extremely tragic incident we can confirm that the dog was only bought by the family a week ago and officers are working to identify the previous owners of the dog concerned and establish its history” – said Detective Inspector Lisa Milligan.
“If you were in the Bidston Avenue area this afternoon and witnessed anything, or have any information about the dog in question then please come forward speak to one of our officers” – said Merseyside Police.
Under the Dangerous Dogs Act certain dog breeds are prohibited in the UK. They are: American pitbull terriers, Japanese tosas, Dogo Argentinos and Fila Brazileiro. Hybrids of this breed are also forbidden.
