Charles III was proclaimed king at a ceremony at St. James. Charles took the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but a historic meeting formally confirmed his role.
During the meeting of the Accession Council, the king approved the day of the queen’s funeral as a day off.
For the first time, the historic celebration was broadcast on television and on the Internet.
Secretary of the Privy Council, Richard Tilbrook, proclaimed Charles “King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith” before proclaiming “God save the King.”
