The London Bridge Plan provides instructions on what to do in the event of the Queen’s death. Her private secretary is the first official (i.e. not one of her relatives or a member of the medical team) to deliver this message. According to the plan, the first step is to contact the prime minister, where government officials use secure telephone lines to tell the prime minister the slogan “London Bridge is down”.

Liz Truss was informed about the departure of Elizabeth II at 4.30 p.m., i.e. at 5.30 p.m. Polish time. An official announcement was made three hours later.

The next step was to contact the new king, who automatically became Prince Charles, now His Majesty King Charles III.
