Cases of Diphtheria, a dangerous infectious disease of children, have been discovered at the Federal Asylum Center in the former Ziegler Hospital in Bern.

These are the first cases in nearly 40 years. Over 180 people have been quarantined. Among them there are 92 children.

– We test all people on a large scale, and we also offer vaccinations – said Samuel Wyss, spokesman for the Federal Secretariat of State for Migration. – There is no skepticism about vaccinations. People know diphtheria can be a serious, deadly disease – he explained.

Diphtheria is named depending on what parts of the body it attacks. Diphtheria of the throat, larynx, nose, ear or skin may occur. The most common character attacks the throat. There is a severe swelling of the lymph nodes, moderate fever, pale face and sore throat. Thereafter, it may come to the general hiring of the body. Heart rate is rising, there are heart problems. Necrotic heart inflammation or muscle paralysis may occur. Recovery from the disease takes a long time, but organ changes are most likely to regress. Diphtheria always requires hospital treatment. It can lead to death.
