There is not much left of Mariupol today. The city has undergone shelling and bombing.


As former British Joint Armed Forces Commander General Richard Barrons told the BBC, the capture of Mariupol is a key undertaking for the Russians:

“When the Russians feel that they have successfully completed this battle, they will secure the land route from Russia to the Crimea and consider it a great strategic success,” he said.
