Russian soldiers occupying the Chernobyl nuclear power plant “looted and destroyed” a laboratory containing radioactive samples, the BBC reported.
British television referred to a message from the Ukrainian state agency for the management of the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
“The Russian occupiers illegally seized the latest laboratory worth 6 million euros, which is located in the exclusion zone
The Russian occupiers looted and destroyed the newest Central Analytical Laboratory in Chernobyl, which is a unique complex with powerful analytical capabilities, can provide services at any stage of radwaste management, from air conditioning to disposal, as well as research and technology development.
Thanks to the EU Instrument for Nuclear Security Cooperation (ISRP), a project aimed at improving the radioactive waste management infrastructure was successfully implemented in 2015 together with the Ukrainian partner of the SACP. Almost 100 units of state-of-the-art costly analytical equipment, which has no analogues in Europe.
The laboratory performed strategic, unique functions, namely:
o characterization of samples of radioactive waste from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone by physical, chemical and radiation indicators;
o analytical assistance in verifying the compliance of conditioned waste packaging with specifications;
o development of necessary methods for control and standardization.
o provision of analytical services in matters of state examination of nuclear and radiation safety and control over compliance with licensing conditions in the implementation of activities in the field of radwaste management;
o advisory support to public administration bodies on the implementation of the Concept of Exclusion Zone Development (reburial of radwaste, selection of a site for the creation of a radwaste burial ground, monitoring of the exclusion zone, etc.);
o expert-analytical and methodological support of participants in the process of radwaste management (objects of the exclusion zone, NNEGC “Energoatom”, etc.).
At the base of the laboratory were highly active samples and samples of radionuclides, which today are in the hands of the enemy, which we hope he will harm himself, not the civilized world.” – we read in a statement by State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management
