Krisztián Sárneczky, an astronomer at the Konkoly Observatory at Piszkéstető Station in Budapest, Hungary, spotted a fast-moving object at the Minor Planet Centre on March 11, 2022. The collision with Earth was certain
NASA Scout’s collision risk assessment system then took early measurements to calculate the object’s trajectory. It turned out that a 100% chance of an object colliding with the Earth was obtained.
The asteroid hit the atmosphere as predicted.
Based on observations of the asteroid approaching Earth, scientists calculated that 2022 EB5 was about 2 m (6.5 ft).
Asteroid 2022 EB5 is the first space object observed from Europe just before it hit Earth.
